We all are aware that there aren’t many official holidays in the month of June in India. But for the world as a whole June is a month of celebration on various topics and aspects. In our previous blogs we shared some knowledge and information about some of the days of June. In this blog we will talk about World Oceans Day that was established by the UN. Every year World Oceans Day is observed on June 8th.

Oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, have 97% of the earth’s water, and represent 99% of the living space on the planet by volume. More than three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. Oceans are home to nearly 200,000 identified species. It absorbs around 30% carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming. Moreover, oceans serve as the world’s largest source of protein, with more than 2.6 billion people depending on the oceans as their primary source of protein. The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on earth. It covers 30% of the earth’s surface.

Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean is the theme of World Oceans Day for 2022. Today many countries are celebrating. The United Nations Division hosts the celebration for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, Office of Legal Affairs, and it is produced in partnership with nonprofit Oceanic Global. The focus of this event will be safeguarding our ocean, its ecosystems and biodiversity and building climate change resiliency. We need to conserve our wonderful marine resources for future generations
